Provence & Côte d'Azur: Mayor of Nice uses parliamentary loophole to spent 500 euros a week on chauffeur

Estrosi uncovered flying personal driver to Paris

The weekly newspaper Le Canard enchaîne has accused Nice’s mayor, Christian Estrosi, of spending taxpayers’ money on flying his personal driver between the Côte d’Azur and Paris.

Estrosi, 55, who also sits as an MP in France’s National Assembly has reportedly been paying 500 euros a week to transfer his chauffeur from the Alpes-Maritimes up to the French capital.

The mairie in Nice were quick to respond to the news, insisting that there has never been an attempt to try and hide this detail and that it is something that is accepted under French law.

However critics have suggested that this is taking advantage of a flawed constitutional privilege that allows members of parliament the necessary means to perform their duties. "It’s just not regulated," local government expert, Jean-Marie Rainaud complained to 20 minutes "Every mayor in the country is taking advantage of this law, with each one interpreting it differently."
