Provence & Cote d’Azur: Estrosi threatens to quit the LGV project
Estrosi puts his foot down
Mayor Estrosi made his ultimatum on Monday to the supervisory committee in charge of financing a planned TGV (high speed train) that will run from Marseille to Nice. He pointed out that the committee can either push the new minister of Ecology and Transport to approve, without delay, plans to create a fast train connecting the city to Genoa or they can kiss goodbye to him clearing the further bill, permitting an LGV line between the French capital and the capital of the Cote d’Azur.
“If they say no to us, we will withdraw from the supervisory committee and we will not participate in co-financing, researching and helping with new projects.” he said confidently
It seems that this pressure to officially approve a Nice-Italian project has been the cause of a delay for planning procedures to get underway for a 3h30min TGV from Paris-Nice up and running before 2036.
For now, officials in Nice are refusing to wait for the Parisian link and instead, are hoping that the proposed Nice-Italy project will help safeguard the future of tourism and economy in the region.
If the state gives the green light on the project, roadworks between Saint Augustin (near the airport) and the Italian border could begin in 2018. These lines will help link the bay of Agnes to the major business port Genoa in less than two hours.
The Mayor has also suggested that local authorities and the president of the regional council of Provence-Alpes-Cote-d’Azur are to soon announce future plans to reconstruct the train line between Genoa and Ventimiglia.
