Provence & Côte d’Azur: Sea pollution and gas explosion cause havoc in Menton
Environmental threats in Menton
Swimming in the waters off Menton was banned on Wednesday 5th October because leaking sewage had contaminated the water. Efforts are underway to fix the problem and the beach is due to be open to the public again this weekend. Mairie-Laure Morgado, from The Health and Hygiene Service, told the Nice Matin: "New water analysis will be performed this morning but it is necessary to wait 48 hours to gather results. We want to do this quickly as the aim is to reopen this weekend." Extensive research has been undertaken to determine the exact cause of the pollution. It appears that a leak in a pipe from a sewage treatment site is the source of the problem.
Meanwhile, there was a violent gas explosion at around 8am on Thursday 6th October in an apartment block on la Rue Pietra Scritta in Menton. A 45-year-old man was seriously injured and airlifted to a severe burns unit at Saint-Anne hospital in Toulon.
