The elderly driver from Carnoules panicked at the Puget-Ville peage after he missed his exit at Cuers Nord. After realising that he had forgotten his money, the man turned back in a panic onto the motorway and drove 10 kilometres down the road, travelling in the opposite direction to the traffic flow.

Thanks to surveillance cameras, authorities were soon notified and blocked vehicle access to the road until safe. Meanwhile, traffic radio stations were also informed, drawing attention to motorists on the A57.

The man, who remains anonymous, has been given a 135 euro fine and will lose four points from his licence.
