Provence & Côte d'Azur: The second earthquake in four months hit the Alpes Maritimes early this morning

Earthquake rocks the Côte d'Azur

Shockwaves were felt as far as Nice and the Var this morning after an earthquake shook the Hautes Alpes. The tremors are the second of their kind to hit PACA soil since October 2012.

The northern east part of Guillestre in the Hautes Alpes hosted the "light" earthquake this morning

Judged as "light" by the French seismological centre (BCSF), the earthquake at 5.30am on Monday 7th January measured 4.1 on the Richter scale.

"The tremors have been felt inside homes near the epicentre in the north east of Guillestre and along the Durance," explained the BCSF to Nice Matin. This morning's incident follows a 4.2-strong earthquake on 3rd October, which was also felt on the Côte d'Azur due to its epicentre on the Italian border, near Cunéo.
