Plans to build a new 14.5-million euro hi-tech water treatment plant in Vence next year were revealed on Monday.

Mayor of Vence, Régis Lebigre, alongside his Niçois counterpart Christian Estrosi announced that the new works would be build on the site of the existing Malvan water treatment plant, with the area’s other station at Vosgelade scheduled to be phased out by 2025. Despite complying with EU regulations, the authorities are keen to replace the two obsolete plants, which were built in 1984 and 1978 respectively,

A new water treatment centre and storage basin will be built on both sites with a new pumping station and storm basin being added to the existing Vosgelade structure.

The construction of the planned plant will be put out to tender this year with the work to be completed, it’s hoped, by 2014. Christian Estrosi said that the collection and treatment of wastewater had become a priority in terms of sustainable development, the tourist industry, protecting the environment and public health.

The project has a strong environmental angle and the reconstructed Malvan plant will feature a 650 square metre photovoltaic roof that will produce electricity to be sold back to the national grid. The building will also be powered and heated using eco-friendly practices, such as heating water through solar power.

Over 800,000 euros have already been spent on researching the scheme and the total cost of the development is expected to hit 18.5 million euros.
