Provence & Côte d'Azur: Former mayor of Vence asks for a hearing following grandson's confession

Christian Iacono to appeal against prison sentence

Christian Iacono, the former mayor of Vence, who was sentenced to nine years in prison in February for raping his grandson, has launched an appeal in the wake of the victim changing his testimony.

Gabriel Iacono, 20, was published in Nice Matin on Wednesday admitting that, despite claiming for 11 years that he had been sexually assaulted by his grandfather, he now believed he may have been mistaken about the identity of his attacker.

The revelation has prompted the 76-year-old former mayor to seek a hearing at the court of appeal, which is expected to take place in the next few weeks. "We will make an appeal under the grounds of new evidence coming to light," Dominque Roméo, Christian Iacono’s lawyer said.

It is likely that, due to the strength of the appeal, he will face a third trial at a later date.
