The crafty criminals used a metal strip which was fitted with double-sided tape to block cash dispensed from the ATM machine. The device is virtually undetectable to victims who are tricked into believing there is a malfunction in their transaction. As soon as the victim leaves, the thieves discretely take the money trapped behind the metal plate.

But a worried customer raised the alarm last week in Bandol.

Police investigating the scam reportedly identified the fraudsters and brought them in for questioning on Friday 9th December. The two suspects are Romanian, both in their forties and currently living in Toulon.

It is believed that their cunning system is derived from a similar scam used by criminals in Marseille last summer. However investigators say this technique is new to the Var region.
