Provence & Côte d'Azur: Nice Côte d'Azur airport has halted the night time parking of private jets

Airport cuts down on noise

Neighbourhoods around the Nice Côte d'Azur international airport will be breathing a sign of relief as well as getting a better night's sleep now that private jet parking near the Promenade des Anglais has been permanently shut down at night. Mayor of Nice Christian Estrosi, who pushed for the ban, says he's delighted by the change, following an earlier statement that the move will "improve the quality of life for all those living nearby."

Following numerous meetings with the Consultive Environmental Commission at the airport as well as launching a noise surveillance operation in the travel hub, all business and private aviation parking in the area near the Promenade has been halted between 11pm and 6am.

But if the planes and their pilots are unable to park in their usual spot, where are they to go? "A new parking area for private jets - further away from the homes of residents - will be opened in 2013," said the mayor.

"I am very happy with these first steps, which will considerably ease the noise pollution that residents are subjected to," added Estrosi.

"I have not forgotten my main objective to have all commercial flights between the hours of 11pm and 6am banned," stressed the mayor, "this is a matter of health and quality of life."
