Monaco: The marriage of Charlene Wittstock and Prince Albert brings up very interesting opinions from fellow countrymen

What do the South Africans think?

As the second major royal wedding of the year takes place this weekend, all eyes fall on the tiny principality of Monaco. Although no country will be celebrating the nuptials of Prince Albert II and Charlene Wittstock more than Monaco itself, there is another nation with a vested interested in the affair... Today the flags of South Africa are also flying high around the Principality in honour of the bride. The Riviera Times asked some of Miss Wittstock's fellow countrymen and women for their thoughts on the Big Day:

Tanya Frühauf, originally from Durban:
"Charlene went to school in Durban so I am happy that the city and South Africa in general are becoming world famous because of this wedding. Life in Durban is much freer but for her that freedom has gone forever. For this reason I am not envious."

The South African, Editor, Heather Walker:

"As a newspaper for global South Africans, The South African likes to follow the successes of its citizens who have made their mark internationally. Charlene Wittstock is a prime example. Not only is she beautiful, and an accomplished swimmer but she’s bagged herself a prince! Like fellow blonde beauty and Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron, Wittstock grew up in the small town of Benoni, just outside Johannesburg, which has given many people renewed hope that fairytales can come true. If two girls from Benoni can make it big, then anything is possible!

Wedding fever has not gripped South Africa the way it did in England, but South Africans are justifiably proud and excited about their very own princess-to-be. While her marriage ceremony to Prince Albert of Monaco will take place in his home country, what has been described as a ‘lavish’ wedding reception will take place in hers. The couple will host 200 guests, including international royalty, at a seaside luxury hotel in the city of Durban on 7 July, five days after their nuptials. Now everyone is speculating who these international royal guests will be."

Hugh Mitford Raymond, SAFI
No one at SAFI knows her but we hope that she'll one day join in on an event. She seems very proud of her South African heritage. It is a wonderful boost to morale. We sent a congratulatory letter and got a personally signed reply full of warm thanks. SAFI will be flying the South African flags on the Promenade des Anglais with a large screen TV, drinks and food and it will be an open house for all South Africans." Those interested in attending should email safiriviera@orange.fr as there is a limit of 30 spaces available.

Those hoping to tune into the event from South Africa itself, the wedding will be screened on SABC3 from 3.30pm tomorrow.

Let us hope that Charlene will be happy. If the French don't like it that is too bad. Albert married her and not the French. I am suprised to hear that she is not well liked.
