Monaco: Wedding countdown, The Big Day part 1: US band delight royal couple and residents on the eve of today's civil service
Wedding festivities take flight with the Eagles
The three-day nuptials began last night with a concert by American rock group the Eagles, of Hotel California fame.
Sharing their joy in the event of their forthcoming marriage with the people of Monaco, the concert was opened to 15,000 residents, who were each able to get their hands on 2 tickets free of charge.
The prince and his princess attended the event, both dressed in casual black outfits and waving and smiling as they took their seats in the stadium.
It is the second time the couple have made a public appearance in the last few of days, the other occassion being on Wednesday when they were seen strolling around the principality checking on the various wedding preperations.
Other dignitaries at the event last night included Princess Caroline and her children.
The Eagles played popular songs Try and Love Again, Life in the Fast Lane, Hotel California, of course, and many others.
The surprise hit of the night was Love Will Keep Us Alive, which was dedicated to the betrothed.
At the end of the two-hour concert, the couple received a standing ovation from the crowd, who shouted, "Thank you" and "Bravo".
The wedding steps up a gear today with the first of two services and another free concert this evening.
This time Jean-Michel Jarre will provide the entertainment, with a music, video and light show in Port Hercule at 10.30pm.
Before that, at 5pm, the prince will marry Miss Wittstock in a civil ceremony in the palace's 'Throne Room'.
It will broadcast live to the citizens of Monaco on giant screens in the Place du Palais, directly outside of the palace itself.
Then tomorrow comes the religious ceremony in the Palace Cour d'Honneur, which will be lead by the Archbishop of Monaco and attended by a host of glamorous guests - from fellow European royalty to fashion designers, film stars and business tycoons.
The couple will drive around the streets of the principality after exchanging vows so that well-wishers can catch a glimpse of the beautiful bride and her regal groom.
Finally, they will welcome their guests at a sparkling reception in the Salle Garnier.
Although an inevitably glitzy affair, the man orchestrating the wedding meal, Alain Ducasse has told Nice Matin that the bride has requested a simple dinner without fat, without sugar and without luxurious ingredients.
The curtain will come down on a wonderful weekend with a bang - a firework disply and music at midnight. No doubt a fitting end to a moment that will make it's mark in history.

What a delightful spectacle. I'm quite please with what the couple is doing for their people. Who knows how many of them could not have gone if they had to pay for the ticket! They have to maintain their yachts clean somehow. The future is looking bright for Monaco.

I guess even the glitzy Monaco Times doesn't have enough money to hire a decent proofreader? Even as a product of the dismal American public school system, I know that this wedding wll make ITS mark in history, not IT'S mark. If you have an opening for a long-distance proofer, you have my email. Congrats to the bride and groom.
