Moving religious ceremony in Monaco unites Charlene and Albert II in the eyes of the church
The tears of a bride
Monaco and its new princess excelled themselves yesterday with an intensely moving and lavish religious ceremony in the main courtyard of the Palace which had been turned into a consecrated “church” for the occasion.
Charlene looked every inch a princess, as she walked down the red carpet to the palace on the arm of her father, Michael Wittstock. Her mother Lynette and brothers Gareth and Sean were also present. The off-the-shoulder white satin dress, designed by Giorgio Armani and embroidered with 40,000 Swarovski crystals and 30,000 seed pearls, enhanced her natural elegance while the five-metre long train of silk tulle added drama and pageantry to the occasion. She wore no jewellery and no tiara; just a diamond-studded hair piece leant by her sister-in-law HRH Princess Caroline.
Her prince looked equally dashing in the cream summer uniform of the palace guards (Carabiniers), the sleeves embroidered with oak and olive leaves, and his chest emblazoned with medals for the Order of Saint Charles, the Order of the Grimaldi and France’s Legion of Honour.
Among the 800 guests in the main courtyard were French President Nicolas Sarkozy, the kings of Sweden, Belgium and Lesotho, as well as Britain’s Prince Edward Earl of Wessex and his wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex, Sir Roger Moore, Naomi Campbell and soprano Renee Fleming who sang at the service.
The catholic ceremony and mass was led by Archbishop Barsi and ended on a superb rendering of Ave Maria by Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli. The world class Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra and choir provided the music.
When the couple left the palace, they were showered with rose petals as they walked through the 3,000-plus guests who were seated in the square watching the service on giant screens. The couple were then driven in an open-topped low emission Lexus car down the road from the Rock to Port Hercule, past crowds lining the road to cheer them on, to the Sainte Dévote church.
It was here where Charlene followed the tradition of placing her bouquet inside for the patron saint of Monaco. For 15 minutes all the pomp and ceremony were left behind as the Prince and Princess got out of the car to give this home-spun crowd of volunteers a chance to take photos and greet their new princess.
This tiny symbolic church tucked away at the bottom of a ravine is a very spiritual place, which is at the heart of religious tradition in the Principality. The Song to the Virgin Mary sung by Marie-Clotilde Wurz-De-Baets in a duet with her 11-year-old daughter Juliette provided an unexpectedly moving interlude, away from the tumult of what had gone before – a moment for the bride to reflect on the significance of what she has committed herself to in the eyes of the church.
The marriage represents a new beginning for the Principality and the fervent hope here is that it will succeed. Claire Lathbury

Her tears were because she realised that she was tied to this horrible man for a life time. I am so sad for her

No one can ever know why anyone sheds a tear. There are many reasons for tears ranging from love and joy to devastation. It is also quite common to be overwhelmed by inexplicable tears in a very spiritual place such as the Sainte Dévote church. Even for people who are not overtly religious, it can happen spontaneously. If you are a bride--especially one under as much pressure as Her Serene Highness--tears on your wedding day are almost expected. Most brides carry a tissue or antique handkerchief just in case. Sadly, people get off on making pronouncements of condemnation based on their caustic prejudices rather than understanding the complexity of human nature and the human response.

@philly: you could say that, or maybe she just wanted to run away?

I am sorry to say she is one of the saddest brides I have ever seen. I feel so sorry for her. Look at the photos of Kate and then Charlene, the difference is so great.

@ellenore: Are you blind?

@ wedding planner - I agree, she looks terribly stiff and nervous and not at all a joyful bride. Whilst it's true that it is not uncommon for a woman to cry on her wedding day and I have, indeed, seen many shed a tear, they don't look the way Charlene did - she seemed uncomfortable, tense, wretched. And in Albert too, there is something missing. I understand that behaviour in these kinds of situations is tied up in protocol, there was something missing between these two that was so clearly evident between William and Kate, who were having exactly the same kind of formal, royal wedding.

I Agree 100% with Philly! She might be a little insecure but give her time to settle, she will be THE Princess, so to speak, for the Principality of Monaco. She will be the symbol of what the palace mostly need - and she will give it all of her heart! I honestly think she had tears of emotion in the little church because, something so simple proved to be larger than anything else on that day and specifically that captured a beautiful moment that resonated with her heart more than that of her mind. I think they both really love each other! Where there is true love there is happiness! They will work it out!!! Furthermore, They had the civil ceremony the day prior to the religious wedding, they had all the festivities and they married late that afternoon, with more festivities that went on until yesterday - can you imagine how utterly tiered they both must be by now... And most of all - as much as we would like to think they are being entertained by everyone - they are the one's who are entertaining the world in more ways than one! SUPER HUMAN BEINGS IT SHOULD BE CALLED IF YOU ASK ME!!!??? Give the Serene Prince and Princess of Monaco reason to feel so fortunate to be married and in love and the whole world at one with them, seem to be a little difficult isn't it?

@carlu: 1. you spelt tired wrong 2. what's so super about sitting around all day taking other people's money for doing nothing and acting like a complete farce...

@ Geoff, it seems you have a point to prove, I prefer not to note any of your comment... work it out for yourself!

@philly and @carlu: In my opinion YOU are both completely right! Philly, your sentence «people get off on making pronouncements of condemnation based on their caustic prejudices rather than understanding the complexity of human nature» is simply great and so true!

What a joyous occasion for the bride and the people she is representing. Royal weddings often draw the biggest attractions and attentions all over the world. Though this wedding might not have the scale and popularity of the Prince William and Princess Kate wedding, it too provided the press with plenty to write about.
