Monaco: Head of Catholic Church currently has no plans to visit Monaco in 2012

No Pope visit for Monaco?

The Vatican’s latest announcement that Pope Benedict XVI will no longer make a trip to the Principality "for the moment" has shocked the Catholic community in Monaco. The question, however, amongst many disappointed residents is whether it is a postponed or canceled visit.

Pope Benedict XVI no longer visiting Monaco in 2012

It’s disappointing news for the catholic community, as the Pope’s visit would have coincided with the 125th anniversary of the Principality’s Roman Catholic Archdiocese – an important moment for many devoute Monegasque catholics.

A special ceremony at the cathedral attended by both the Archbishop of Monaco and the Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See were also on the cards for the Pope’s visit.

Meanwhile, 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of catholicism as the official state religion of the Principality.

The Principality has emphasised that the Pope's visit has only been postponed "for the moment."
