Monaco: The Principality hopes that the new refurbished market will create a strong, friendly atmosphere

A feast of treats at renovated Condamine Market

The Government of Monaco unveiled the results of a 1.8 million revitalisation project on Friday, which has created a fresh, new, dynamic space of commerce at the Condamine Market. The new food market is shaping up well with some excellent refurbished stalls and it's all been given the tick of approval by Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene at the inauguration on Friday.

The princely couple had the pleasure of meeting the dedicated vendors and tasting a diverse range of local treats before meeting some of the gardeners, who have for the past few months constructed a new playground in the vicinity.

The inauguration of the newly refurbished stalls marked the culmination of a project that the council has been battling with since 2006. For the past few years, government departments and communal services have been working closely together to restore the food-orientated section, creating a new, fresh, dynamic farmers market.

A third of of the 1.8 million euro price tag has also been put towards renovating the cold storage facilities. Additionally, a total of 550,000 euros has been spent on the beautification of the exterior.

The Principality hopes that the unique transformation will draw more visitors and vendors to participate in the authentic venue, selling a collection of fresh produce and different local specialities from barbagiuans to pissaladieres.

Among the improvements are new self service areas as well as a feast of lively stalls including a range of bakeries, butchers, fishmongers, delicatessens, ice cream stalls and a sushi bar.

In addition, extended opening times have been introduced and the market will operate between the hours of 7am - 2.30pm and 4.30pm - 7.30 Monday to Friday, Sundays from 7am-2pm.

The Condamine Market  dates back to 1880 and was an important social meeting point for numerous Monegasque citizens of all ages.

But that's not all. There are also plans to improve the quality of services by adding a WI-FI service, making the market zone just that little bit more hi-tech!
