Italian Riviera: Astronomical debate in Genoa

The Christmas Comet

A special meeting of scientific minds to try and find a logical explanation for the phenomenon of what religious tradition refers to as the Christmas star takes place today (5th December 2007) in Genoa at L’Auditorium dell’Acquario di Genova.

The Book of Matthew explains how at the time of Christ’s birth, Kings from the Orient carrying gold, frankincense and myrrh were guided by a star to Bethlehem to honour the baby Jesus. For those that believe in the birth of Christ it is clear that God could have arranged an exceptional astronomic event to coincide with this important birth. But it is equally interesting for non-believers to try and find out what happened all those years ago on that night and subsequent nights when religious stories tell of a star over the stable where Jesus lay.

The star that guided the three Wise Men (who were possibly also astronomers) also guided shepherds from the pastures. Astronomer Walter Riva, Director of the Astonomic Observatory of Righi will explain what scientists believe may have really happened. ‘Even if it is generally agreed that the worlds of religion and science operate on separate and distinctly different levels, it is often true that the two worlds have cause to meet and give many of us reasons for great joy, ‘explains Riva. The conference is organised by Gli Amici dell’Acquario in collaboration with L’Acquario itself and is supported by La Compagnia di San Paolo.

Entry is free.
