Art & Culture: Latest addition to the Annonciade's collection is a Valtat
Young lady wows visitors
Valtat was a regular visitor to the Côte d'Azur after spending the winter of 1897 in Agay, a small fishing village near St Raphaël. Later on he and his wife Suzanne used to cycle over the Estérel hills and the other painting by him in the museum is of this region.
It was a German gallery owner who first suggested the town buy another Valtat to complement L’Estérel.
Museum curator Jean-Paul Monery managed to obtain 50 per cent of the initial asking price of 110,000 euros from FRAM (Fonds régional d'acquisition pour les musées), even though they managed to secure it for 90,000 euros.
This latest purchase comes after the museum received three very interesting donations in 2010: a painting by Henri Person Pont de pierre à Bordeaux, a Dufy drawing, Le port de Saint-Tropez, and a work by Chambaud entitled Les joueurs de boules.
Visitors to the current André Dunoyer de Segonzac exhibition, on until 26th of April, will see the young lady on the shores of Agay on the ground floor. The Annonciade is open daily except Tuesdays from 10-12 noon, and 2-6pm.
