Arts & Culture: Festival of underwater imagery

Water world

Today the 35th edition of the Festival of Underwater Imagery gets under way at the Palais des Congrès in Juan-les-Pins. The event will take place over five days, ending on Sunday, and will exhibit a selection of 168 films and around 1,500 photographs of life in our seas and oceans, according to the local paper Nice-Matin – it is therefore surely guaranteed to offer some truly beautiful images.

With 25,000 visitors expected over the next five days, the organisers want to instill in the festival a spirit of ecological awareness, highlighting the danger of underwater life from global warming and climate change. In this context the honorary president of the festival this year will be Leslie Leaney, a British citizen who founded the Historical Diving Society USA, an association dedicated to looking after the history of diving.

Whilst the films, documentaries and stunning photography will delight many visitors, there are also other events on the calendar. There will be a homage to the French filmmaker Christian Pétron, known for his contributions to Luc Besson’s The Big Blue (1988) and Atlantis (1991) amongst other works. Philippe Valette, president of the festival told the local press that there will be five films dedicated to his life and work. The homage will start at 8.30pm on Friday. Preceding this there will be a forum on the subject of the ‘Oceans and climate change’ which will reinforce the awareness aspect highlighted by the organisers and raise some valid and topical areas of discussion. The forum takes place on Friday afternoon, at 2pm.

The festival is open every day from 9.30am to 10pm, and ends on Sunday. For all further information regarding the programme and entry prices, please call +33 (0)4 93 61 45 45
