Arts & Culture: Monaco exhibition showcases radical design concepts

Ron Arad - 'Spectacle vivant'

The work of designer/artist/architect Ron Arad is in constant flux, an on-going experiment in possibilities.

The unusual shapes and materials of Arad's work make it unique

In his current show, until September 11th, at Monaco’s Sem Art, 20 Rue de la Costa, he has played with radical new concepts in furniture design: his chairs, armchairs and rocking chairs gently caress the curves of the body in materials like aluminium, steel and polyamide. The Israeli-born Arad has built an international reputation with his dizzying evolution of design concepts. Londoners will be familiar with his Selfridges Technology Hall and his Upperworld Hotel, Battersea Power Station. As Professor of Design product at the Royal College of Art in London, until 2009, he encouraged students in his libertarian “No discipline” philosophy.

The gallery, a new concept for Monaco, also offers a restaurant with Mediterranean cuisine, café and garden - a total aesthetic experience.

Visiting hours: 9am-6pm weekdays and 2-7pm Saturdays. Contact: www.sem-art.mc
