Arts & Culture: The annual opera festival in Antibes, staged in the villa gardens of Villa Eilenroc

Music at the Heart of Antibes

“Music at the Heart is pure pleasure!" The words of Artistic Director Eve Ruggieri perfectly describe the annual Opera Festival, staged in the sumptuous gardens of Villa Eilenroc on Cap d'Antibes.

This year the beautiful opening concert hosts 'The Greatest Choirs and Opera Duos' on 2nd July, with the Moldavia National Orchestra and Choirs, conducted by Grigori Penteleitchouk.

Director Petrika Ionesco returns to the Cap after his acclaimed Macbeth last year, with The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart on the 7th and 9th July. Belgian bass-baritone Laurent Kubla, hailed by the Opera Magazine as "the best of news" in his role as Schaunard in La Bohème, is Figaro and Romanian soprano Teodora Gheorgiu  his fiancée Susanna. Baritone Sébastien Soulès plays Count Almaviva and the soprano Vannina Gheorgiu, winner of many awards since her debut in 2007, his wife the Countess. With the young and gifted international cast, conductor Benjamin Pionnier and the Nice Philharmonic Orchestra and Opera Choir, a memorable evening is assured.

'Opera sings cinema' on the 11th July with Natalie Dessay and Michel Legrand will delight opera buffs and lovers of film music alike. French light soprano Natalie is an operatic star who thrills audiences as both a singer and an accomplished actress.

International celebrity Michel, who celebrated his 80th birthday this year, is author, musician, composer, musical score arranger and film-maker among many other roles in his long career.

When Natalie, a spellbinding Queen of the Night in Mozart's The Magic Flute, and Michel join in singing “I will wait for you” from his atmospheric 1964 film The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, spines are sure to tingle on another magic night of opera under the stars.
