Arts & Culture: Art meets shopping at the Metropole

Mauro Corda and Mickey Mouse

Combine shopping with art this summer at the Metropole Shopping Centre in Monaco as you walk past the likes of Red Valentino, Replay and... Mauro Corda? The former winner of the Monte Carlo Princess Grace art prize is exhibiting some of his finest works inside the glamourous building in a modern take on what a gallery is meant to be.

Mickey Mouse by Mauro Corda

Spread across all three floors of the shopping centre, Corda's 21 unique and abstract sculptures dominate the space and command attention with their unusual and quirky shapes.

In a clash of classic and contemporary, his work emits an elegance as well as having an extreme. One of the most easily recognisable pieces is Corda's contortionist figure with the visage of Disney's iconic Mickey Mouse.

While some may already know the artist's work - he has visited the Principality throughout his career for shows and exhibitions - some of the sculptures have never been displayed in Monaco before.

His use of shape and light has created beautiful and arresting art, free for you to see right up until 8th September.

Corda's work shows a deep understanding and fascination with the human form. "He is an explorer," says George Vigarello, a member of the Institut Universitaire de France, "he can reveal the intensity and magic of the body while touching on its weaknesses and vulnerability."

The Metropole is open from 10am to 8.30pm Monday to Saturday and, starting 8th July, on Sundays from 11am to 7pm.
