Service: June is the perfect time to visit a string of exotic gardens in Menton

"My town is a garden"

Last stop before the Italian border, and scenic Menton boasts a special micro-climate. It is why the pretty port town is famous for its annual lemon festival in February, while the favorable weather it enjoys is ideal for exotic plants, hence the community's slogan Menton, ma ville est un jardin.

Serre de la Madone was created by Sir Lawrence Johnston. Free entertainment takes place on Mother’s Day 7th and Father’s Day 21st June. Children aged 6-12 years old can join in the frog hunt at 3pm

The likes of Miss Campbell and Sir Lawrence Johnston found inspiration here.
In June many of the abundant gardens, both public and private, will open for privileged visits of the spectacular flora, which includes many rare species.
This year numerous events at different locations are planned, many of which are new and interactive.

Bring and buy sale
For starters, Sunday 31st  May is the town's first 'garden bric-a-brac’ sale. Everyone is welcome to come along to buy, sell, exchange or trade! Contact the organisers if you have lots of unwanted garden items and would like to participate. Tel: 04 92 41 76 76.

On 6th and 7th June, the town follows the nation's lead with the 7th annual rendez-vous in the country's gardens. The theme this year is Terre, terrain, territoire (earth, land, urban landscape), and will allow a scientific and historical approach as well as a cultural one. The Serre de la Madone garden will demonstrate its clever watering system, which harvests H20. Visits are at 10am and 3pm with guided tours by the gardeners at 74, route de Gorbio.
The gorgeous boulevard de Garavan, which links the old town with the Saint-Louis bridge, was constructed in 1883. Through the years its borders were filled with sumptuous gardens and a stroll along this villa-lined artery became a perfumed experience as the scent of orange trees and jasmine blossoms pierced the air. Hence the district’s nickname the 'Babylon dream'. Meetings for guided tours take place at the main entrance to the Pian park at 10am and 3pm. The lovely Belle Epoque Les Jardins Biovès on 1.5 hectares is the town’s largest public garden. Meeting for visits is at the tourist office on avenue Boyer at 10am and 2.30pm.

Wine tasting
On top of that, wine tasting takes place at the Annonciade vineyard where brothers from the monastery can also tell you talk about its history. Meeting at 10.30am on 3rd and 17th June, Monastère de l'Annonciade. Five euros per person.

Eileen Gray, the Irish furniture designer, is today widely hailed as the leader of the Art Déco movement. She found inspiration from two prominent architects based here during the 1930s. Enter into their world from Tuesday to Saturday (10am-12.30pm and 1.30pm-5.30pm until 29th August). Meeting point at the Hôtel d'Adhémar de Lantagnac. Free and open to all.  PF www.menton.fr/jardins
