column: RT editorial for May 2010

The jetset Cannes still go glam

OK, so they may not be everyone's idea of a good time. However, for a lot of mere mortals the Monaco Grand Prix and Cannes Film Festival hold a special allure and embody many modern day aspirations - fame, beauty, glamour, luxury...

Over the past year, such words have become unfashionable and although we are now recovering from recession, it continues to leave an indelible mark.

Previewing the two events for this month's RT, I’ve heard a lot of speculation about how they will fare. The Grand Prix, for example, took a hit last year. However people are predicting a comeback in 2010. Organisers of Cannes have recognised the film industry is changing. Their response? To make a more audacious selection than ever. Change, you see, isn’t always bad.

Besides there will always be those who’ll want glam regardless, for whom Cannes and Monaco will remain Meccas forever. Personally, I love a good party. Although wearing an extra winter “layer”, the only crisis I’m facing is whether I’ll fit into my favourite dress. Luckily, this issue also has the bikini body in mind - think asparagus, a breath of air and the odd canope.
