column: RT editorial for February 2011

Not just for Valentine's

This month lovers will celebrate Saint Valentine with overpriced meals in overpriced restaurants. Bah Humbug, I hear you say and feel free: I am happy to admit I've never quite got Valentine’s Day. In fact I've long suspected the 'tradition' is a ruse devised by Hallmark to make us buy gift cards.

And I'm not alone, Ashton Kutcher, the amour of Demi Moore, once said: "I hate Valentine's Day. I think every day should be a day of romance. Then, on Valentine's Day, you should get to tell whoever you hate that you cannot stand them. There would be one day of hating, and 364 days of love."

I know, I can’t believe I just quoted Ashton Kutcher, yet in his own airheaded way he makes a valid point: we’ll throw all our energy into one romantic gesture on one day of the year… and then neglect our partners the rest of the time. The lead features in February’s RT, on infidelity and divorce, show us that we do this at our peril: the reality is a relationship requires effort 365 days a year... and a little romance thrown in for good measure.
