Business: Jobless figures up for first time in four months

Unemployment figures in France rise

After four consecutive months of decreasing figures the number of unemployed registered with ANPE (category 1) at the end of January 2008 rose by 0.7 per cent compared to December 2007 (+13,200).

This latest statistic brings the total number of unemployed in France to 1.910 million or 8.4 per cent less than the previous year, according to the Minister for Employment.

Figures are adjusted for seasonal variations. Category I is the official barometre for statistics since 1995 and encompasses unemployed people seeking full-time work on a permanent contract, who have not worked more than 78 hours in the previous month.
