Business: Filling in forms in a foreign language can be complicated

A helping hand with tax returns

Although self-assessment tax forms in France are not due to be submitted until the 31st of March, filling them in can be a minefield especially when doing it in another language.

Fortunately help is at hand. Roland Ludewig, CEO of Ludewig Assurances, who has offices in Grasse, Cannes and Mandelieu-la- Napoule offers advice and help especially if your circumstances are a little more out of the ordinary than usual. Take, for example, if you are eligible to pay the French wealth tax, currently payable if you earn over 800,000 euros a year. “It is complicated for someone who is close to the wealth tax threshold, you need a reliable investment counsellor to help you through step by step." says Ludewig.

In France any form of income is deemed taxable as part of the state income tax. This can mean funds that
are generated through work, pensions and other assets. It is also worth noting that employees are paid their
gross income in France, unlike in the UK where income tax is already deducted from a pay packet,  therefore there is more emphasis on the individual to complete an accurate tax assessment. In France there  are four tax bands compared to only two in the UK, but the top rate of income tax is still 40 per cent.
