Event: L'école de Nice celebrates 50 years
Up in Smoke... and living to tell the tale
The exhibition entitled ‘l’école de Nice va partir en fumée – the school of Nice will go up in flames’ is reference to a comment made by Daniele Giraudy during a discussion regarding the end of New Realism, in Milan in 1970.
The art school, which counts Arman, Christo and Niki de Saint Phalle (see December RT) amongst its celebrated alumni, has survived despite early skepticism regarding its chances of survival, and has gone on to reach its half-century.
A variety of works representing the école’s rich history will be on display to mark the event. And there will be a festive twist, with the current student’s New Realism take on the nativity scene.
Hosted by the Niçois artist Jean Mas, the colourful patron of the school of art for many years and a driving force behind its longevity.
