Events: Nice will host its 7th annual superhuman triathalon on Sunday, June 26th
Swim, cycle, run: the Ironman is coming
Instead, some of the fittest people in the world will be participating in one of the most gruelling physical challenges on earth in the 7th annual Ironman France Triathlon.
The event on the 26th of June is set to draw in a huge crowd of spectators with all eyes on Spaniard Marcel Zamora, the Ironman five-time winner and race record holder. As he aims for a sixth straight win at Ironman France-Nice, Zamora's biggest competition is 2010 runner-up, Frederik Van Lierde of Belgium, who finished only five minutes behind him last year.
In the women’s competition, the expected 80,000 spectators will be watching former Ironman Nice 2008 winner Martina Dogana from Italy face one of her greatest opponents, French native Alexandra Louison who won in 2007.
Only the toughest athletes from around the world compete in the triathalon. Competitors will swim two circuits in the Mediterranean Sea (3.8km), bike a route through the Nice hintreland (180km), and run four laps of the Promenade des Anglais (42km).
To allow the 2500 triathletes to compete in the 1.5-million-euro event, there is restricted access to the Promenade des Anglais for traffic from today until next Wednesday (June 29th), with a large portion of it closed off completely on Sunday.
Live coverage of the race can be watched on: www.ironman.com
