Events: Grasse's annual jasmine festival kicks off today

Fête du Jasmin

Capturing the sweet scent of jasmine has been perfected in Grasse, the capital of perfume. With the production of a mere kilogram of scent requiring one thousand flowers to be handpicked at dawn, the town invests great care and attention in the delicate flower.

The love is in air at the town’s annual Fête du Jasmin, which has taken place on the first weekend of August since 1946.

This year’s festivities will take place over three days and are expected to attract around 45,000 visitors, beginning at 9pm on Friday the 6th of August with fireworks and music.

On Saturday there will be more musical events and at night the spectacular floats will parade through the town. There will also be the popular ‘bataille de fleurs’, where a staggering 50,000 flowers are thrown into the waiting crowd, and Miss Grasse is expected to join the party too.

On the Sunday there will be more bands playing at ‘Jardins de la Princesse Pauline’ and the festivities are, yet again, set to continue into the evening.

Most events are free, but some require a nominal fee of no more than seven euros (half price for children under twelve).
