Traditionally, carnival time gave the public a chance to let off some steam and indulge themselves before the deprivations of Lent. Nowadays, it's a perfect excuse to break up the boredom that arrives with winter and, this being the Côte d’Azur, a way of attracting tourists in the low season when the weather has a good chance of being fine. Whether it's giant papier mâché heads or elephants adorned with citrus fruit, carnivals are exciting, colourful, and often downright weird.
