Service: Towns across the Côte d’Azur switch off to avoid overload

Xmas lights out

With the cold snap putting pressure on the electricity network in the south of France several towns have opted to switch off their Christmas lights to ease the burden.

On Wednesday, the RTE (Réseau de transport d'électricité) responsible for France’s electricity network warned that the risk of a power cut occurring in the Alpes-Maritimes and Var departments was high, particularly between 5pm and 8pm.

In response Menton, Théoule, Vence, Cagnes and the Principality of Monaco all elected to turn off their festive lights in some areas, at least until this evening when the situation is expected to improve. One of the problems is that the Alpes-Maritimes and the Var are at the end of the regional network which is based in Marseilles and are particularly susceptible to blackouts when there is a peak in demand.
