Events: Top level karting competition takes over Port Hercule this weekend

Future champions to Monaco

“From little acorns…” so the saying goes, and in Formula 1 the acorn is the go-kart. The Buttons and Hamiltons of this world earned their stripes in karting, and this weekend sees tomorrow’s champions competing in the 13th Monaco Kart Cup. Suffice to say that Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel, currently lying third in the F1 drivers’ championship, won this cup in 2001.

Organised by the Automobile Club de Monaco, the event is a qualifier for the CIK/FIA (international karting commission) Championships, Cups and Trophies in the KF3 kart calendar. Top prize in this category is 4,000 euro, while the winner of the KZ2 karts will walk away with 2,000 euro.

The course is just over a kilometre long on the Quai Albert 1er promenade, round the swimming pool and along the Darse Sud road by the harbour. Note that the Darse Sud will be closed to traffic from 12.30pm to 6.30pm on the Friday, 8am to 5.45pm on Saturday and 8am to 6pm on the Sunday.

The two final races that will determine the overall winners are on Sunday: 4.10pm to 4.40pm (28 laps) for the KZ2, and 4.50pm to 5.20pm (24 laps) for the KF3 karts.

As for the Monaco Grand Prix, the paddock where you can meet the drivers and visit the exhibition stands is on Quai Antoine 1er by the port.
